Body Doubling: The Support No One Told You That You Needed

Body Doubling: The Support No One Told You That You Needed For a lot of ADHD and neurodivergent brains, that presence changes everything.

There’s a particular kind of shame that comes with staring at a task you know how to do, want to do, and still cannot make yourself start.

I know this shame intimately. I lived most of my life without knowing why some tasks felt impossible while others, often bigger ones, felt easy. It wasn’t until I received my ADHD diagnosis at 52 that so much of my life finally made sense. The unfinished projects. The rooms I avoided cleaning. The way I could give a keynote to hundreds of people but couldn’t make myself return a simple email for three weeks.

For most of my life, I thought this meant something was wrong with my character. Now I understand it was never about character. It was about how my brain is wired, and about never having the right kind of support in place.

What Body Doubling Actually Is

If you haven’t heard the term before, body doubling is simple. It means having someone present with you, in person or by phone, while you do a task. Not managing you. Not judging your pace. Just there.

For a lot of ADHD and neurodivergent brains, that presence changes everything. A task that has sat untouched for weeks can suddenly become possible in twenty minutes, not because anything about the task changed, but because something about the environment did.

This isn’t a productivity hack. It’s not about tricking yourself into working harder. It’s about recognizing that some brains function differently in the presence of steady, non-judgmental company, and building support around that truth instead of around shame.

And it’s not about starting over every Monday, that’s exhausting and a train headed to burnout. We are caught in the hypervigilance, the fight and flight. A continual loop of the dog chasing it’s tail, and only the dog is happy about it.

We start with awareness, slowing down, decoding the long to do list and over producing. We ask why? Start to pull back the curtain and find 1 small tiny step is all we need. We keep practicing boundaries, discernment, the power of the pause, instead of the knee-jerk reactions.

Movement is replying to that email, completing 1 task and finishing a chapter in that book you started reading. Small, simple and do able!

Why I Do This Work

After my diagnosis, I started paying attention to what actually helped me versus what I had been told should help me. Planners alone didn’t help. Willpower lectures didn’t help. What helped was having someone alongside me, someone who understood that starting is often the hardest part, and that finishing feels different when you’re not doing it in isolation.

That’s why I now offer in-home and online body doubling with practical support, alongside the Yoga, Mediumship, Reiki, and Somatic work I’ve done for years. It might look different on the surface, spirit work in one hand, task support in the other, but underneath, it’s the same commitment. Meeting people exactly where they are, without judgment, and helping them move from overwhelm into action.

This support can include:

  • Body doubling while you start or complete tasks

  • Breaking overwhelming tasks into manageable steps

  • Light organizing and decluttering alongside you

  • Practical decision support and accountability

  • Creating routines that are realistic for your actual life, not an idealized version of it

This is practical, non-clinical support. It’s not therapy, and it’s not a replacement for medical or mental health care. It’s simply another form of showing up for people who have spent too long being told to just try harder.

If This Is You

If you’ve read this far and something in it feels familiar, the constant starting over, the exhaustion of trying to explain why simple tasks feel so hard, the years of wondering what’s wrong with you, I want you to know there’s nothing wrong with you. There’s a good chance your brain simply needed a different kind of support than the one the world handed you.

If you’re curious what that support could look like, I’d love to talk with you.

Book a call here or comment below and tell me what’s been feeling hardest to start lately. I read every response.

With gratitude,

Christine
